Nancy Gordon Coben died peacefully on Tuesday, August 27 at her home in Houston.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Lew Coben, and survived by her loving children, Rabbi Amy Weiss (Rabbi Kenny Weiss), Ron Coben (Leanne), Jeff Coben (Karrie), grand children Eli and Joshua Weiss, Sydney and Justin Welling, and David and Melissa Coben, great grand-children Noah and Brayden Coben.
Nancy was born and raised in Cleveland, OH, oldest daughter of Sam and Etta Gordon. She graduated from Heights High and attended Ohio State, instilling in her a love of watching the tuba player dot the script “OHIO” at football games.
Nancy and Lew married in 1953, settling in Cleveland and owning a Barton’s Candy store that served the community until the Cobens moved to Dallas in 1970.There they raised their three children, Jeff, Ron and Amy and owned a candy and gift manufacturer reps business at the World Trade Center in Dallas.
After retiring from working alongside Lew for many years, Nancy became the registrar at the religious school at Temple Emanu El in Dallas, where she loved being enveloped in her Judaism on a daily basis and interacting with families.
Moving to Houston to be near their grandchildren, Nancy volunteered for Ellen Cohen’s first campaign and became a regular volunteer at Texas Children’s Hospital. She remained active at Brookdale, registering voters for each election and staying up to date on political events.
Services were held at Congregation Emanu El Houston, Nancy has been laid to rest in Dallas next to her husband and grandson.
