Morton Leon Berman, 85, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2019.

A native Houstonian, Marty was born April 15, 1934 to Anna and Dave Berman. He graduated from Reagan High School in 1952 and then earned his degree in accounting from the University of Houston. Marty served in the Texas Army National Guard Reserves from 1954 to 1961.

During a 37-year career with Coastal Corporation, Marty served as an accounting director, first in Corpus Christi, Texas. After a short stint in Colorado Springs, Colorado, he returned to Houston for the remainder of his career.

Marty’s great loves were his family, friends, watching sports, reading and reclining in his chair. While he always enjoyed travel, Marty became even more passionate about exploring the world following his retirement. He continued to put his finance and accounting prowess to work as a member of the Heritage Grand Finance Committee. He was a long-time member of Congregation Emanu El.

Marty was selfless, caring and fun to be around, which helped him develop lasting friendships throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Ruthe Ignatoff Berman; daughter Lisa Berman and son-in-law Dale Surbey; son David Berman and daughter-in-law Julie; granddaughter Katherine Berman and grandson Matthew Berman; brother Bernard Berman and sister-in-law Phyllis Berman; sister Susie Berman Abramson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Marty’s life can be made to Congregation Emanu El or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
