Marjorie Raport Stein September 4, 1932 - November 10, 2018

Surrounded by her close family and following a 2 year battle with lung cancer, Marjorie Raport Stein passed away peacefully  at her home on November 10, 2018. She was the middle child of Samuel and Frances Raport, born September 4, 1932 in St. Paul, Minnesota. At age 14 and while in junior high school, she met the one true love of her life, Harlan Stein. After high school, Marjorie and Harlan were married while both were  attending the University of Minnesota. She was 5 days shy of her 20th birthday. Their oldest child, Shelley, was born 10 months later, and followed slightly more than 2 years later by their second daughter, Debbie.

After his graduation from college,  Margie and Harlan moved to the San Fernando Valley in California where they raised their daughters. Margie was a stay at home mother raising her daughters while supporting Harlan early in his  career as a mechanical engineer. Despite her husband’s extensive travel schedule, she still managed to finish her undergraduate degree at The University of California. Then, in 1972, the family moved again, this time to Houston, Texas where they lived the remainder of their lives.

In the late 1970’s, Margie and two of her close friends opened  a jewelry store, The 14 Karat Connection. Despite no prior business experience, the store was very successful for many years. After it closed, Margie continued her work in jewelry, initially at Houston Jewelry, and subsequently for many years, Zadok Jewelers. She continued to work at Zadok’s for years after Harlan’s death, stopping only in the last few years as her health failed.

Margie loved bridge and played as often as she could. Throughout her life, what  she loved the most was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Even as her health worsened in recent months, her greatest joy was seeing and talking with her family. She also never missed an opportunity for a family meal, even when she couldn’t do the cooking. However, her recipes have survived her and will be passed on to future generations – minus the few key ingredients which she conveniently neglected to tell anyone about.

Margie was preceeded in death by her parents and her daughters, Shelley Solomon  and Debbie Goldberg. She is survived by her brother Howard Raport, sister Barbara Stoff,  sister-in-law Nancy and husband Herman, sister-in-law Sharon Pesses,  sons-in-law Edgar Goldberg and Dr. Stuart Solomon and wife Suzy , grandchildren David Goldberg and wife Shaina, Leslie Goldberg, Stephanie Cohen and husband Josh, Robyn Hirvela and husband Ben, and Mindy Solomon.  She is also survived by her 5 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The  family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to her caretakers during the last 2 years of her life, including Geraldine Butler, Sharon Hood, Marquitta Harper, Loretta Liggins, and Rhonda Williams. Their loving care and support helped make her last years and those of her family so much better than anyone could have hoped.

For those wishing to make a donation in her memory, please give to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
