Jean Mary Cahn, age 76, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday November, 2, 2019. She was in the company of her husband and daughter. She was born December 23, 1943, in Council Bluffs, IA. Houston became her home in her early twenties where she became a civil draftsman and designed the drainage for many of the roads in the Pasadena area. She was very proud that those roads have never flooded. She went on to earn a BA in English from the University of Houston in Clear Lake and later a Master’s degree in English and Graphic Design. After her career as a civil draftsman she joined AmeriCorps and learned how to be an ESL and GED teacher. Jean had a wonderful knack for teaching and helped hundreds of students become proficient English speakers. The students gave her so much joy.
She married Jerry Cahn May 10, 1992. She and Jerry enjoyed traveling the world together and planning new adventures. She was an active member at Temple Beth Tikvah and enjoyed her mahjong and book clubs. Jean had many talents. She was an accomplished seamstress, played guitar and piano, and sang. For years she studied the writings and philosophies of Carl Jung. She eventually became an “Elder” at the Jung Center in Houston, TX.
She is survived by her husband Jerry Cahn; daughter, Tara Hoppe Fowinkle; son, James Claude Hoppe; step-son, Samuel Cahn; step-daughter, Pamela Ann Labbe; brother, Jim Dennis; brother, Jeff Dennis; granddaughter, Rachel Wood. She has a total of four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
