Howard Joseph Stern, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away unexpectedly on August 27, 2019, in Sugar Land, Texas, at the age of 71. Howard was born and raised in New York City before attending undergraduate school at the University of Miami. He then went on to study law at South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas. During that time, he met the love of his life, Barbara Darryl. Shortly thereafter, they married in Dallas; they were happily married for 47 years. Howard devoted his life to his family as well as the Jewish Community including Beth Israel and The Jewish Community Center.

He leaves to treasure his memory, his wife, Barbara; son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Ronit; and two grandchildren, Heaton and Hannalee Stern. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Dennis Darryl and his wife, Terry; mother-in-law, Anita Darryl; niece, Ashley and her husband, Jeff, as well as countless others who knew and loved him.

Howard was known to all as a man of the highest integrity – a real mensch.

I am so sorry for your sudden and terrible loss. I was sitting next to Howard just this past Saturday at Torah Study at Congregation Beth Israel. As always, he was deeply involved in the group conversation and totally focused. His kindness, his love of Judaism, and his inquiring mind were always evident as one of the “regulars” of the group. He will certainly be missed. May his memory be a blessing for you and your family, and for all who were privileged to know him. Sincerely, Alan

Howard was a wonderful person and a treasured attendee at Saturday morning Beth Israel Torah Study. Many times I had the pleasure of visiting with Howard before and after the study. Each and every week Howard had thoughtful comments and questions during the study. Howard was a thoughtful and loving person. My prayers are with his family. Randy

I am so sorry for your loss. I didn’t know Howard very well but I would see him early in the morning at the JCC pool and he always had a smile on his face and a wonderful, happy disposition. He will be missed 🙁

I first met Howard at Rabbi Judith Abrams’ classes and later studied with him at many different Melton classes at the Jewish Community Center. His knowledge and wisdom added much to each class and he was a blessing to all. May his memories help bring comfort to his family and friends.

We were so sad to hear that Howard passed away. Howard was special to Danny because he was his Shabbat buddy when Danny came here from Michigan. He was a very kind and good friend as well as a wise advisor when we needed an attorney or had a legal question.
