Gloria Sacks August 2, 1942 - January 3, 2019

Gloria Sacks, 76, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 3, 2019, in Katy, TX, following a long and brave battle with Alzheimer’s.

Gloria was an amazing person, friend, daughter, wife, and mother.  Born in Cape Town, South Africa, August 2, 1942 the daughter of Harry and Pearl Opwald, she moved to Katy, TX with her young family over 40 years ago.  There she raised her family, along with many of the neighborhood children.

Gloria was gifted with a very sharp wit and humble character.  She was kind and caring, always opening her home to family, friends, neighbors, and anyone in need.  When her children were in Elementary and Middle School, she and her husband bought a fifteen-passenger van so that she could pick up her children, along with other Jewish children whose parents were working, to take them to Hebrew School two times a week.  She opened up her doors, and was a mother figure to many other neighborhood children, whom she loved dearly. Some of them even lived in her home.

A phenomenal cook, Gloria loved the holidays, when she would cook traditional Jewish cuisine.  Gloria also enjoyed sewing and knitting, playing bridge, and was excellent at crosswords puzzles.  However, Gloria’s greatest pleasure was tending to her grandchildren; with her broad smile revealing her deep joy when they called her “Grandma.”

Gloria leaves behind her husband of almost 54 years, Gerald Sacks; her children Lauren (Ian) Dean, Jonathan (Jessica) Sacks, Daniel (Darcy) Sacks and Nadine Sacks; her grandchildren Alexander, Eli, Albert, Zoey, and Abigail; and siblings Zelda (Elkan) Gamzu, Selwyn Ilan, and Colin (Paddy) Opwald.

May God comfort Gloria’s family among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, and may her memory be for a blessing.

A Graveside service will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 12:00 pm, Adath Emeth Cemetery, 1540 Sylvester Road, Houston, Texas 77009
