Gitta Engel passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, surrounded by her children. Gitta was passionate about butterflies and rightly so. In her quiet manner, she emulated their beauty through her acts of kindness, large and small, to benefit her family, friends and fellow residents at Brookdale Galleria. Gitta was known as the ambassador of the first floor at Brookdale since she always greeted fellow residents and guests making them feel good.
Gitta was a Life Member of Hadassah and a past member of Women’s American ORT. A lady who exemplified style and grace, Gitta had a passion for fashion, a hobby she enjoyed sharing with her daughters.
Above all else, Gitta was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was devoted to and loved her family, and her family was devoted to her and loved her back. There’s no question Gitta’s life was complete with her daughters and family members by her side.
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on October 6, 1925, Gitta moved to Orlando, Florida in 1947, where she met the love of her life, Bryson, to whom she was married for 65 years. Together, Gitta and Bryson moved to Houston in 2011 to join their family and create many happy memories.
Gitta is survived by her children, Susan and Ronnie Schanzer and Honi and Michael Abbott; her grandchildren, Sara Raymon, Blake and Valerie Schanzer, Steven and Rachel Abbott, and Meryl and Adam Hawk, her great grandsons, Will Everett Raymon and Dylan Bryson Schanzer, and numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom she loved dearly.
Gitta was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bryson, who passed away in 2015, her parents, Bessie and Harry Sulman, siblings, Minnie Pearlman, Lena Frank and Sam Sulman.
The family would like to thank Gitta’s loving caregivers, Dayo Adetayo, June Brown, Mayang Bitaseme, Marcie Hemabou, Katherine Okechukwu and Xenia Morales, for their devotion and support.
