Betty Soto Sapsowitz 86, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019, at her home in Houston, Texas. Betty leaves behind her son, Dr. Steven Sapsowitz, MD; her daughter Laura Shelby and son-in-law Bruce Shelby; and her grandchildren Riley Shelby and Jaron Shelby.
Betty was born and raised in New York City where she met her husband and love of her life, Max Sapsowitz, to whom she was married for 51 years until he died in January 2008. With her husband’s encouragement, Betty obtained two masters degrees, one in Elementary Education and the other in Child Psychology and became a teacher, an occupation which she embraced for more than thirty years.
Betty was the daughter of Albert and Esther Soto, who immigrated to the United States from Salonica, Greece and were proud members of the Sephardic Jewish community. She was completely bilingual and enjoyed speaking Spanish whenever she could.
Betty enjoyed travel with her husband and opportunities to learn. She liked to do puzzles and games and would often clip interesting articles that she read to share with others. She was a sweet soul who always tried to do her best and find the good in everything. She will be missed, but her family is comforted to know that she is once again united with her beloved, Maxy.
Services will be officiated by Rabbi Steven Gross and will be held at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet Street on Sunday, January 13 at noon.
