Alper, Barbara 73, passed away On January 24, 2016 at the Methodist Hospital Houston. She was born to Sam and Frimi Perelmuter of Louisville, Kentucky in May of 1942; she grew up in Louisville and attended Fern Creek High School and the University of Louisville. She married William Strong Alper in 1964, also of Louisville Kentucky. They later moved to New Jersey and then Houston Texas, where she later received her MEd at the University of Houston.
Barbee spent 20 years in her private counseling practice in Houston, where she quickly became the Houston version of Dr. Ruth Westheimer. She was also an instructor in higher Learning programs.
She was proud of her Kentucky Heritage and held an elaborate annual Kentucky Derby party for all her friends and family to attend. It was not uncommon for Louisvillians to opt to spend Derby Day in Houston.
After the passing of her husband, Bill in 2003, she moved to the Hampton High Rise in Houston where she had many friends. At the Hampton she participated in many activities and enjoyed dinner parties, Bridge games, Scrabble and the Kazoo band. She organized many events for the residents and continued to organize the Derby party at the Hampton. She was cared for by her dear friend and caretaker, Nelda Wyatt.
She is survived by her two sons Allan Gregory Alper and Brian Strong Alper, three sisters Marsha Bornstein, Susan Bledsoe, Anita Chambers, three grandchildren, Sophie, William and Ian, and several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at Emanu El Cemetery at 4pm on Sunday, January 31, 2016.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Jewish Family Services of Houston.
